Mary P. Coates-Patsos Memorial Award
Mary Coates-Patsos died September 2003 at the age of 36 years old. She battled a rare and chronic disease called Takayasu’s Arteritis for more than 10 years. Shortly after being diagnosed, she founded a non-profit association on behalf of all afflicted with this disease. The association provided education and support to Takayasu’s Arteritis patients, family members, health professionals and in general people throughout the world. Mary made a decision not to be a victim of her disease but rather a pioneer. She had a tenacious desire to aid others affected by this disease. Her bravery was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She emphasized the most positive aspects of a situation. She had an extraordinary ability to persevere despite great obstacles and a courageous attitude that radiated throughout the community.
The annual Mary Coates Patsos Memorial Award recognizes a Power Kid who has outstanding character, contributes to our growing community as a responsible citizen in both spirit and action, exhibits kindness, compassion and understanding of a high order by giving of one’s self to kids in need, even when this course is a difficult or unpopular one.
